RIA Language Progression Pathways
Our Mandarin Immersion program follows a 50/50 immersion model. Our students receive 50% instruction in Mandarin taught by a native Chinese speaker and 50% in English from kindergarten through 5th grade.
In kindergarten, the subjects taught in Mandarin include Mandarin Literacy, Math, Social Studies, Science, Music and Art. The English instructions focus on English Language Arts.
From 1st grade to 5th grade, in addition to the Language Arts of their specific language, the Mandarin and English partner teachers have shared responsibilities for math, social studies, science, art and PE.
Additionally, Mandarin immersion students receive Spanish enrichment instructions for a third language.
Students may select to begin Spanish immersion as early as Universal Transitional Kindergarten (UTK). Our K-5th students are immersed for 90% in the first two years and transition to a 50/50 Spanish/English model by 5th grade.
Instruction in Spanish includes reading, math, social studies, science, art, Spanish language, and more. In grades 2-5, students are instructed in non-transferable skills in foundational phonemic awareness and science.
Additionally, Spanish immersion students also receive Mandarin enrichment instructions for a third language.
